LETTERS TO THE EDITOR — Saskatchewan’s enviable record

The article “Enviable Ontario safety record” (T.N.M., June 22/92) raises some important points regarding joint responsibility between labor and management to upgrade mining health and safety. Without this joint effort, mining in Canada would never have become the leader in safety standards it is today.

Saskatchewan is heavily involved in the Canadian mining scene, with almost 16,000 employed in the province as a result of the industry’s presence. We are the nation’s fourth largest mineral-producing province; the largest exporter of potash and uranium in the western world and generate well over 70% of our electricity from our coal. We also produce sodium sulphate, salt, gold, base metals and a variety of clays. As well, we have the potential for a diamond find.

For the last 3.5 years, the industry as a whole has maintained an injury frequency of less than one per 200,000 man hours. This is to be envied even by Ontario.
