LETTERS TO THE EDITOR — Mining vital to B.C.’s economy

The Round Table on the Economy has recognized that the resource sector will continue to be British Columbia’s underlying strength.

Mining alone employs about 14,400 people directly in the province, with an average wage of $57,700. Many of our interior communities depend partly or entirely on this industry. Most of mining’s $3-billion output is exported, helping our national balance of trade.

As well, the Mining Suppliers, Contractors & Consultants Association of British Columbia estimates that there are another 20,000 direct jobs with suppliers that depend on mining in the province.

When you consider the downstream effects, there are probably 100,000 people in British Columbia benefiting from mining.

The industry is also important to the provincial government and deserves its support. For example, in 1991, mining paid $175 million in taxes. All the mines, currently or ever, in operation use less than one-tenth of 1% of the land in British Columbia.

The bottom line is that mining brings high-paying jobs. With good management, the industry can continue to be a strong contributor to and driver of our provincial economy.
