Letters to the Editor Labrador Trough clarification

We read with interest your report in the May 18 issue concerning three properties in the Labrador Trough area of Quebec optioned to Outland Resources. Since the article cites work carried out by the Quebec ministry of energy and resources, I find it necessary to bring certain clarifications to your attention and that of your readers.

It is quite true that excellent analytical results for platinum-group elements and gold have recently been reported from the Labrador Trough and vicinity. In the spring of 1986, the ministry suggested a good platinum potential for the Trough on the basis of preliminary mineralogical and analyti cal work, but the confirmation of this potential awaited the 1986 exploration program by La Fosse Platinum Group Inc. when some seven different showings were discovered. The ministry has also reported encouraging gold values from several places in the Labrador Trough, but most of the recent interest for gold stemmed initially from our 1985 reconnaissance mapping program in the Archean rocks northwest of Schefferville, west of the Trough, which turned up four samples with excellent gold values.

On the other hand, the ministry has not reported gold or platinum occurrences on the Franelle property in the Labrador Trough north of Schefferville. Nor has the ministry reported significant platinum- group element values in the gold- bearing rocks northwest of Schefferville, as your article intimates.

I hope these few comments will help your readers to assess properly the information provided in your report on Outland Resources.

We hold in high esteem the way in which your publication fulfils its mandate to inform its clientele on geological and mining matters. Andre F. Laurin, Assistant deputy minister, Ministry of Energy and Resources, Quebec.
