Letters to the Editor Giauque staked Discovery claims

I thoroughly enjoyed the 75th Anniversary issue of The Northern Miner. Concerning “The dirty ’30s” article by Frank Kaplan and the reference to Jerry Byrne and the Discovery mine, I’d like to mention that J.C. Byrne certainly promoted and financed the Discovery mine, but the prospector who found the orebody in 1944 was Frederick Giauque.

Freddie was born in 1919 in Titchfield, Sask., operated out of Yellowknife, N.W.T., for many years, and at present lives in Grand Forks, B.C. In 1956, he discovered the NI copper-nickel deposit in the Lake Athabasca region of Saskatchewan. In 1960-63, he was chief mechanic in Granduc. Later, he found Blue Dog gold prospect near Weiser, Idaho. Fred continues to prospect for gold in the western U.S. and British Columbia, and is now headed for Australia. James Loghry Tucson, Ariz.
