Patrick Whiteway may be partially correct in his guest column (T.N.M., June 15/92) for the declining membership in the Geological Association of Canada (GAC). As an original member of GAC, I dropped my membership years ago when GAC became an organization for the few talking to the few.
They showed no concern for and permitted no input from geologists outside of academia and the government surveys. They surely did not offer anything of value in The Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences where form and structure of a paper took precedence over content and readability. This is borne out by the survey which showed that most members do not want the journal. The geological section of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum is following the same path. Its recent exercise containing papers from China and elsewhere was of little interest to the industry’s geologists. W.G. Wahl
