I have subscribed to The Northern Miner for the past six years. In this time, I have seen the mineral industry deluged by increased public scrutiny with respect to mining and its effect on the environment, most of the attention being of a unfavorable nature.
I suggest The Northern Miner devote 1-2 pages to focus on environmental issues. The environmental or waste management section could contain articles on pollution abatement technology currently used; emerging environmental technologies covering waste water treatment, milling and refining; and mine and tailings reclamation.
The section could also cover legal issues such as possible future environmental legislation, current legal actions being launched by government and industry and past precedents that had a serious effect on today’s environmental laws.
A question and answer section also could be included to facilitate open discussion on any environmental issue that may affect the mineral industry. Howard Vanstone
