The facts are quite different. Following consultations with the Canadian coal industry, activities at Devon in the surface mining of coal were identified as having the lowest priority of R&D needing government support. They are, therefore, being phased out in favor of R&D of higher priority to industry. The staff positions and other resources thus made available will not be transferred elsewhere, but used at Devon for an equivalent effort in areas such as coal beneficiation and environmental R&D on coal and oil sands.
I am sure your readers will appreciate knowing the actual situation. It results from CANMET’s policy of continuously reviewing its priorities and adjusting its programs to ensure the greatest impact on sustainable economic development in the Canadian mineral and energy industries. M.D. Everell Assistant Deputy Minister, Energy, Mines and Resources Canada
