LETTERS TO THE EDITOR — Blatant rumors about diamond hunt

During the past several months, I have enjoyed reading the news and activities on the exciting diamond front in the Northwest Territories. I do question, however, The Northern Miner’s role in fuelling the rampant speculation through blatant rumors.

A recent article by Virginia Heffernan (T.N.M., Aug. 17/92) quotes “fly-by detectives” as saying BHP Minerals Canada has recently shipped some “diamondiferous core” to the laboratory.

I have been involved in diamond exploration and evaluation since the mid-1970s and feel quite comfortable with kimberlites, diamonds and their kindred rocks. However, when it comes to making the call that the rock is diamondiferous before it is analyzed, especially from the distance of “unimpeded vistas,” it would seem that other explorationists are more talented than I.
