LETTER TO THE EDITOR — Uranium project decisions show

Just before Christmas last year, the Saskatchewan and federal governments jointly approved two important uranium development projects in northern Saskatchewan, the Dominique-Janine extension and a new mine at McLean Lake.

The governments accepted the spirit of the FEARO (Federal Environmental Assessment Review Office) panel but did not accept the panel’s recommendation that a delay of five years would be required to address certain concerns associated with the McLean Lake project.

The Midwest project, also in northern Saskatchewan, was not approved but will be redesigned and resubmitted, likely next year.

An important conclusion mining proponents should draw from these events is that the Saskatchewan government is prepared to take tough decisions in favor of uranium development and has not been blinded by anti-nuclear advocacy. Walter Keyes
