LETTER TO THE EDITOR — Upham contributed to northern mining town

It was with sadness that I read the obituary of a great miner and friend. Many folks across Canada and the U.S. knew Merv Upham, and I’m sure that you will get notices from others that he in fact worked as underground superintendent at the B1 shaft near the Errington open-pit mine, 3 miles northwest of the town of Atikokan, Ont. (not near Ottawa, as stated).

Steep Rock Iron Mines was one of the greatest mining feats ever undertaken. The mine has been closed since 1979, but the town of Atikokan is going strong and this year celebrated 100 years. We have a great mining museum, and the history of this great mine is well-displayed for all to see.

Bob Moffatt

Atikokan, Ont.
