LETTER TO THE EDITOR — Manitoba spending was understated

Recently, The Northern Miner reported preliminary exploration expenditures for 1996 in Canada, which included an estimate that the expenditure in Manitoba would be $33.2 million (T.N.M., March 13/96).

We believe this number understates, by almost $7 million, the amount of exploration planned for the province. In a survey conducted by the Mining Association of Manitoba, its member firms reported a preliminary exploration estimate of $40 million for 1996, representing a 13% increase over 1995.

In addition, exploration programs that could add $1-3 million to this figure are planned by firms not belonging to the Association.
