I was interested and amused by the story of a moose and its ability to find gold-bearing rocks, as related by Hugh Coulson in his letter (Dec. 31/90). I have also read with interest Harris Hanson’s response to Mr. Coulson’s letter (Jan.21/91).

.TSome of your readers might be interested to know that animals have often played a role in the search of minerals.

In my book Sancta Barbara, I mention a few legends concerning a golden stag, a hen and a goose that supposedly played an important role in the Middle Ages for locating minerals of value. Jean-Paul Drolet Ottawa, Ont.
