Leonard Cunningham

Leonard Joseph (Len) Cunningham passed away in his home on April 5. He was 91.

Born in Cobalt, Ont., he was a mining man his whole adult life, with the exception of a stint in the army during the Second World War. Cunningham graduated as a mining engineer from Queen’s Un-iversity in 1943.

Though his profession took him to other parts of the world, he always returned to northern Ontario, attracted by the region’s mining potential.

Prior to becoming a consultant in 1965, Cunningham worked with mining companies in Peru and Ontario (Cobalt and Gowganda). He joined Heath  & Sherwood Diamond Drilling in 1960, and moved with his family to Kirkland Lake, Ont.

He wrote many well-received reports on the area’s geology, and his 1985 reports on aband-oned mine sites and hazards in the Cobalt and Kirkland Lake camps continue to be a valuable resource.

Cunningham was a member of Queenston Mining’s board for many years, and continued to participate in mineral exploration in his later years.

He was predeceased by his wife Jo, his brothers Pie and Wilf; sisters Audrey and Anne; and his grandson Chal Ladouceur.

He is survived by his four children and four grandchildren.
