Laurentian to offer PhD

Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ont., will offer students a PhD program in mineral deposits and Precambrian geology. The new program is the first doctorate degree offered there.

The Department of Earth Sciences will organize the program, which covers the study of mineral deposits and their origin.

“This is a major development for Laurentian University as it moves beyond its earlier mission as a solely undergraduate institution and begins to achieve international recognition for its research strengths,” says the institution’s president, Judith Woodsworth.

The PhD program is an extension of the existing master of science program, which focuses on mineral deposits and Precambrian geology.

“The PhD program will complement ongoing research activities at the university’s Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC),” says Richard James, chair of the department of earth sciences. “A definite strength is the academic and research credibility of our faculty members and our graduate-level program.”
