Geologist and environmental expert Arlene Laudrum will discuss remediation work at Teck Cominco’s Polaris mine in far northern Nunavut, at the next luncheon meeting of the Vancouver branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. The luncheon is slated for Nov. 25 at the Hyatt Regency.
Laudrum is project manager for the environmental firm Gartner Lee. Her talk will focus on the planning, logistical challenges, and lessons learned during the reclamation of the Polaris lead-zinc mine on Little Cornwallis Island. The mine ceased operations in August 2002, and demolition and reclamation were completed two years later.
During her 18 years in the mining industry, Laudrum has completed environmental site assessments and closure cost estimates at nearly 200 projects across Canada.
Recently, she has been managing the daily on-site environmental remediation work at Polaris. She has also been working with Breakwater Resources at the Nanisivik zinc mine in Newfoundland.
