Under an agreement with Guinean government, Cyprus Amax Minerals (NYSE) can explore for gold in the region known as Mandiana Prefecture.
The area has an extensive gold mining history, with some deposits having been mined continually for more than 1,000 years.
Cyprus can earn an 85% interest in any project that results from its exploration work, with the government retaining a 15% participating interest.
