Newmont Mining President Pierre Lassonde added a couple of ounces to his reserves when he was presented with the Gold Medal by the Ontario Professional Engineers at a ceremony in Toronto.

The award recognizes Lassonde’s commitment to public service and his numerous contributions to mining.

With more than 25 years of experience, Lassonde achieved early recognition in the 1980s when he co-founded two companies: Franco-Nevada Mining and Euro-Nevada Mining.

In 2002, Newmont acquired Franco-Nevada. The major is now worth US$17 billion and has gold operations on five continents.

Throughout his career, Lassonde has promoted mining education and research in Canada and internationally. He established the Lassonde Institute for Engineering Geoscience at the University of Toronto and is a long-time supporter of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. The Hall is now permanently ensconsed at the university, thanks largely to Lassonde’s support and involvement.

Lassonde is also one of Canada’s leading gold experts and the author of The Gold Book: The Complete Investment Guide to Precious Metals.

Upon accepting his award, Lassonde said: “We should never forget that the most important natural resource of our country is not nickel, gold or diamonds, but its people.”

First presented in 1947, the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards recognize engineering excellence and community service. In 2004, the awards were presented by Professional Engineers Ontario and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers.
