Another worker has been killed at Agnico-Eagle Mines‘ (AGE-T) LaRonde gold mine in northwestern Quebec.
On Mar. 28, a worker was crushed to death while loading steel wire mesh into a storage area. The fatality is the second at the mine in less than two months, and the fourth in about 16 years. In early February, an explosion set off while explosives were being loaded into a work area killed a drilling and cabling contractor.
The company says the mine will run at normal levels while local authorities investigate the latest incident.
The latest fatality comes just eleven days after Agnico reported that the Ontario Securities Commission might take action against it and some members of management over the “timing and content” of the company’s disclosure of a 30,000-ton rockfall at the mine in early 2003.
The company announced the fall after the markets closed on Mar. 31, 2003, but failed to indicate when exactly the incident occurred, other than sometime in March (T.N.M., Mar. 29-Apr.4/04). That accident did not result in any injuries or fatalities, and underground and mill operations were unaffected.
The most recent news sent shares in Agnico down 22 to $18.86 in early trading in Toronto on Mar. 29.
