The rush for diamonds in the Northwest Territories has claimed its first fatality.
Howard Damron, a 48-year-old pilot flying under contract for Dia Met Minerals (VSE) and BHP Minerals Canada, was killed when his Hughes 500B crashed east of Exeter Lake, about 150 miles north of Yellowknife, N.W.T. According to unconfirmed reports, Damron was slinging equipment to or from a drill site when the helicopter went down on Aug. 24.
The helicopter was owned by Trans Air North of Whitehorse, Yukon. Damron, formerly of Dauphin, Man., was its sole occupant.
The RCMP in Yellowknife and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada are investigating the crash.
