Lab a memorial to Dr. Duncan Derry

A new electron microprobe lab, built as a memorial to Dr. Duncan Derry (1906-87), opened recently at the University of Toronto. Derry, an Officer of the Order of Canada, was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in January. He was a founding member of the Geological Association of Canada and a distinguished lecturer for the Society of Economic Geologists. With Tuzo Wilson, Derry helped compile a tectonic map of Canada. He also published A Concise World Atlas of Geology and Mineral Deposits in 1980.

The electron microprobe will be used to investigate the fundamental nature of individual grains in a rock or ore mineral and to acquire basic chemical information.
