Kvaerner, the London-based engineering and construction group, has received a safety award for its work at the El Tesoro copper project, near Antofagasta, Chile.
The award, presented by the local, non-profit safety board, recognizes 2 million manhours without lost-time accidents.
Kvaerner is responsible for engineering, procurement and construction of the copper crushing, leaching and solvent extraction-electrowinning plant.
El Tesoro is owned jointly by Antofagasta Minerals and Australia’s Equatorial Mining. In May, the mine is slated to begin producing copper cathode at the annual rate of 75,000 tonnes.
The Kvaerner group generates more than US$8 billion in revenue per year, with 35,000 permanent staff in more than 30 countries.
