Kvaerner lost in Boliden

I look forward to reading The Northern Miner each week, as you produce an excellent publication that is filled with remarkably up-to-date information.

However, I was disappointed that the site-visit report on Boliden in Sweden (T.N.M., May 22-29/00) did not mention my company, Kvaerner Chemetics, as the supplier of the acid plant technology and proprietary equipment for the acid plant expansion. You seemed to mention everyone else involved in the project, so I wondered why you left us out.

Cominco stake bigger than stated

On page 1 of your May 8-14 edition, in the story titled “Stake in Cominco gives boost to Teck,” you incorrectly indicate that Teck holds 40.4% of the outstanding shares of Cominco.

Currently, Teck holds 45.2% of the shares of Cominco.

Yukon bolsters incentive program

The Yukon government says it will provide additional financing to the Yukon Mining Incentive Program.

The program is designed to promote mineral prospecting and exploration in the territory by providing junior prospectors with a portion of the risk capital needed to find and explore mineral deposits.

“The government is demonstrating its commitment to the Yukon mining industry by increasing the Yukon Mining Incentive Program by $250,000 this year,” says Pat Duncan, the territory’s premier and minister for economic development.

He adds that the government has approved 30 applications from prospectors and junior mining companies for a total funding commitment of $469,000. The contributions range from $9,000 to $20,000. Companies and individuals are entitled to have 50-100% of approved expenses reimbursed.

“To accommodate the large number of applications, we earmarked the additional funding,” says Duncan. “The program has aided in several new discoveries. An investment of $442,000 in the program has already helped generate $11.7 million in advanced exploration work on 20 properties.”
