Recent sampling in an area immediately south of the Longshot Ridge copper-oxide deposit near Hawthorne, Nev., has outlined an additional zone of copper mineralization, owner Kookaburra Gold (VSE) reports.
The company notes that the Mayflower zone was sampled along a strike length of about 700 ft., returning a weighted average of 2.68% copper over widths of 5.5-13 ft. The full width of the zone was not available for sampling but is estimated to be about 30 ft. wide, with other narrower zones above and below. Acid soluble tests on the samples returned an average solubility of about 92%, making the zone amenable to solvent extraction.
Kookaburra is now completing a 5,000-ft. drilling program on the main Longshot Ridge deposit and plans followup drilling for the Mayflower zone in order to establish preliminary reserves.
Preliminary estimates prior to the current drilling on the Longshot Ridge deposit put reserves at about 15 million tons grading 0.55% copper. The company notes that the higher grade nature of the Mayflower zone and the high percentage of acid soluble copper could have a positive impact on project economics.
