Kennecott constructs huge Utah smelter

The largest construction project undertaken in the state of Utah is a fait accompli.

The US$600-million Kennecott Utah Copper smelter, near Salt Lake City, was designed and built by Davy International, a wholly owned subsidiary of Trafalgar House. The plant, which will double cathode copper production for Kennecott, has a capacity of 300,000 tons per year.

Construction of the smelter and accompanying refinery consumed 4 million man-hours, as well as 776 miles of wire and cable, 70,000 cu. yards of concrete and 17,000 tons of steel.

The new facility employs equipment and technology that allows the volume of off gas emissions handled by the sulphuric acid plant to be reduced to a fraction of the allowable level in Utah’s new air quality program. Kennecott will now be able to process all of its concentrates at the Utah facility.
