The directors of the KEGS Foundation, an offshoot of the Canadian Exploration Geophysicists Society, have awarded scholarships to seven undergraduate students in geophysics at four Canadian universities.
This is the fifth year the foundation has supported the post-secondary education of aspiring geophysicists in Canada. The scholarships are in sums ranging from $500 to $1,000, for a total of $5,000. Among them is the endowed scholarship, established in 2001 in honour of Heikki Limion (1942-2000), a noted Canadian geophysicist.
All scholarship recipients are in their final year of undergraduate studies. They include: John Evangelatos of McGill University; Tim Dohey, Aditya Pattanaik, John Scaplen and Julie Smith of Memorial University; Catherine Alexandrakis of the University of Western Ontario; and Heather Burgi of the University of British Columbia.
Burgi is the recipient of the Limion scholarship, based on academic achievement and a course load leaning heavily toward mining geophysics.
Two students, Evangelatos and Pattanaik, received renewals of prior awards.
The KEGS Foundation relies on donations to support undergraduate geophysicists in Canada.
