Exploration and mining developments around the world will be the topic of an address Jan. 19 at the Students’ Night dinner of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
Paul Kavanagh, whose mining career has spanned 40 years, will talk on “Today’s global mining expansion: increasing opportunities and challenges.” He will highlight the Busang gold project of Bre-X Minerals in Indonesia which is at the drilling stage, and the Loma de Hierro nickel project of Jordex Resources in Venezuela which is at the final feasibility stage. Kavanagh will also address the area of increasing employment opportunities and challenges in the global mining industry, and he will present some thoughts on how to capitalize on these prospects.
A consultant, Kavanagh is a director of both Bre-X and Jordex. He retired from American Barrick Resources, where he was senior vice-president of exploration, in 1993. Previously, he worked for a number of mining companies, including Rio Algom and Newmont.
Kavanagh graduated from the University of Toronto with an engineering degree and obtained a doctorate in economic geology from Princeton.
