Judgment reserved in Lac/Corona case

Judgment was reserved by the Supreme Court of Canada in an appeal by LAC Minerals (TSE) to overturn an Ontario Supreme Court ruling and win back the lucrative Page-Williams gold mine located in the Hemlo camp in northern Ontario.

A ruling by the five judges in Ottawa who heard the appeal earlier in October is not expected for months.

Awarded the mine, which was developed by LAC, by the Supreme Court of Ontario in 1986 was Corona Corp. (TSE), then known as International Corona Resources. The following year, the Ontario Court of Appeal unanimously upheld that decision.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, Justice Coulter Osborne made public his reasons for dismissing an attempt by LAC to have the original 1986 decision set aside and a new trial ordered. The Supreme Court of Ontario judge released his reasons several days after making his ruling known.

At the Toronto hearing, Lac tried to discredit evidence given by prospector Donald McKinnon at the original trial.
