A geologic resource has been calculated for the Zona Barita play in Cuba, based on drilling and trenching results.
Joutel Resources (TSE) estimates that the property, which is within the Sierra Maestra concession near El Cobre, contains 9.1 million tonnes grading 1.63 grams gold and 3.66 grams silver per tonne. This is equivalent to 14.8 million grams gold and 33.25 million grams silver (or 476,000 and 1.07 million oz., respectively).
The resource is calculated from surface to a depth of 150 metres, and is amenable to open-pit mining.
The Barita is a highly altered, hematitic zone of felsic pyroclastic rocks cut by steeply dipping quartz breccia zones. The gold mineralization is spread over widths of up to 142 metres and is locally enriched in higher-grade areas. The structure measures 400 metres long and remains open along strike and at depth. Results from airborne electromagnetic and ground induced-polarization surveys indicate an untested, 4-km-long anomaly adjacent to the zone.
Joutel will next carry out definition drilling of the deposit and drill-testing of geophysical targets. Also, tests will be performed to determine the feasibility of recovering gold by heap leaching.
