John “Pat” Mangan, known mostly for starting Hedman Resources, has died. He was 84.
Mangan was born in Iroquois Falls, Ont., in 1920, and later moved to Cochrane, Ont., before settling in Timmins, in the same province.
Mangan was known in mining circles for his 29 years with Timmins-based Delnite Mines. He started there in 1939 and would serve as office manager, purchasing agent, and ultimately superintendent.
Mangan enjoyed prospecting, and in the late 1940s near Matheson, Ont., as part of the Dyman Prospecting Syndicate, he and his father-in-law staked the claims that would lead to the formation of Hedman Mines. The company still trades on the TSX Venture Exchange, but as Hedman Resources.
Mangan knew a lot about hedmanite, a sub-category of serpentine, which is used as a replacement for asbestos.
Mangan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norine, and children Jane and Nancy.
