Jeanette Lourim, principal of Toronto-based geological consulting firm Jeanette Lourim & Associates, has died as a result of complications from a long-term illness. She was 62.
Lourim was born in Detroit, Mich., in 1942 and graduated from Wayne State University in 1966 with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She emigrated to Canada with her husband, Tony, and settled in Toronto.
Lourim soon enrolled in the University of Toronto and graduated as a geologist in 1975. Her first jobs took her to Canada’s uranium camps as a geologist with Denison Mines, United Siscoe Mines, and E&B Explorations.
In the early 1980s, Lourim joined the Ontario Geological Survey as part of geochemist John Fortescue’s team, which was involved in a geochemical program in Kirkland Lake, Ont.
In the late 1980s, she left the OGS to become an independent consultant specializing in field exploration, diamond indicator mineral microscopy, and remote sensing.
Her life was honoured at a recent ceremony at the Gaden Choling Buddhist Temple in Toronto.
Lourim is survived by her husband and by son, Sean.
