Jean Elizabeth Wegenast

Jean Elizabeth “Zibby” Wegenast, wife of mining engineer and university professor William Wegenast, has died after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was 73.

Born in Newfoundland, she was the daughter of Prof. Bert and Jean Corlett. She attended Queen’s University and was an active member and supporter of Arts’ 49-50. She married William Wegenast of Queen’s Science ’47 in May 1953, and immediately his profession took them to a series of small mining communities, including: Uranium City, Sask., with Nesbitt Labine (1953-56); Schefferville, Que., with Ungava Iron Ore (1956-61); and Labrador City, Nfld. with Iron Ore Co. of Canada (1961-64). They lived in Edmonton in the early days of the Canadian oil sands project and in Vancouver, B.C., while William worked for Trans Canada Resources. They moved to St. John’s in 1972 so that William could take up a professorship at Memorial University.

Jean Elizabeth Wegenast was active in each of these communities, and kept in touch with her many friends by writing letters and attending industry functions.

She is survived by William, a son, three daughters, and seven grandchildren.
