Nippon Mining Company, Japan’s largest producer of copper, is now exploring for precious metals in North America through a subsidiary based in Reno, Nev.
A few years ago, Nippon made the decision to become involved in precious metal exploration in North America. Last year the company opened an exploration office in Reno.
Tokichiro Tani, general manager of Nippon Mining of Nevada, says the company plans to conduct exploration for precious metals in the western states, and to acquire mining operations already in progress, or in advanced stages of development. Participation in joint mining ventures is also a major objective of Nippon, he added.
Nippon is not currently involved with exploration joint ventures in Canada but it hopes to extend such activity into Canadian mining areas, Tani said.
The Nippon Mining group of companies consists of 85 subsidiaries and 39 affiliated companies in Japan and overseas. Nippon has the second largest copper smelting capacity in the world, and almost all its ores and concentrates are imported from overseas mines.
