Inuit vote to settle land claims

Members of the Labrador Inuit Association (LIA) have approved a preliminary agreement for what is expected to be first land claim settlement in Newfoundland’s history.

The yes vote endorses efforts of the LIA to negotiate a final agreement with the federal and provincial governments. “We are one step closer to closing the circle as the last Inuit in Canada to get a land claims agreement,” said LIA President William Barbour.

The agreement-in-principle includes provisions for the LIA to select 6,100 sq. miles of land in northern Labrador to be owned by the Inuit. It also includes constitutionally protected rights throughout a territory of 45,000 sq. miles, including 17,000 sq. miles of ocean.
