The major research activity in biohydrometallurgy continues to be in the application of bacterial leaching to various complex sulphide ores; the re were 38 pap ers presented on various aspects of bacterial leaching.
The protection of the environment from various pollutants resulting from mining activity resulted in 11 presentations. Metal adsorption by vario us microorgani sms was discussed during nine presentations. Another nine talks covered various applications of biotechnological processes to the recovery or environmental aspe cts of fossil fuels.
Canadians contributed 16 of the 67 formal presentations including two keynote addresses; one on fungal adsorption of uranium from dilute solution and the seco nd on the commercial scale, bacterial leaching of uranium at Denison Mines in El liot Lake, Ont.
