INMETCO opens reclamation plant

International Metals Reclamation Co. (INMETCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of Inco, has begun recovering cadmium metal from spent nickel-cadmium batteries in Ellwood City, Pa.

The $5-million cadmium recovery plant, the only facility of its kind in North America, started up in late December 1995 and is currently capable of processing more than 3,000 tons of spent nickel-cadmium batteries. The recovered cadmium, which is 99.95% pure, will be re-used by manufacturers of nickel-cadmium batteries.
