Indonesia coal

Indonesia is merging its two state-owned coal companies. The new outfit will be called PT Bukit Asam. In 1990, total coal production in the country, by state and private companies, was about 13 million tons; total output is expected to rise to 25 million tons by 1994 because of improved technology. Coal exports doubled in 1990 to 4.5 million tons. The country is hoping its coal will become a major foreign exchange earner in the next century as its oil production declines.
