A major mining development project has been announced by Inco Ltd. for its underground nickel-mining operations at Thompson, Man.
The project, valued at $26.9 million, involves development of the 1-C deposit located between the 2,400-ft and 3,200-ft levels at the north end of Thompson mine near the existing T-3 mine shaft.
Lorne Ames, president of Inco’s Manitoba division, says the 1-C deposit will provide 5 million tons of nickel ore during the next 15 years for processing at the company’s Thompson plant.
He said the development will ensure a “continuity of production from the mine for many years to come and will help secure Thompson’s future.” Development is under way and ore production is expected within a year.
Inco began nickel production from the Thompson plant in 1961. The company employs 1,800 people at its mines and processing plants in Thompson.
