Inco to reactivate Shebandowan mine

Stronger demand for nickel has led Inco (TSE) to reactivate its Shebandowan mine and mill 100 km west of Thunder Bay, Ont.

The property has been maintained on a standby basis since the spring of 1992. Operations will resume this month, with the first ore expected in the autumn.

Daily production of 1,800 tons is expected to rise to 2,500 tons in early 1996.

The Shebandowan mill will produce a concentrate, which will be shipped to Inco’s Sudbury operations for further refining.

Contractor Dynatec Mining will act as mine operator, with about 320 workers on site.

Based on current reserves, the mine is expected to last about three years.
