Nickel producer Inco (TSE) spends almost $600,000 per year planting grass, trees and other vegetation on 2,000 acres of land in the Sudbury-Copper Cliff area in Ontario.
The regreening program has attracted visitors from the world over, including most recently The Prince of Wales.
The tailings area was once a desert-like expanse and is now home to 86 different species of plant life and 92 species of birds. Interestingly, 100,000 evergreen seedlings got their start in a nursery almost a mile underground at the Creighton mine, where constant temperatures make for ideal germination.
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the Canadian Wildlife Service have also worked with the company and introduced the hardy Canada Goose to the reclaimed land. The geese were transplanted from the Toronto waterfront.
