Important results from OGS study

Among the significant Ontario Geological Survey studies in the Northwest Region reported in the past year was the discovery of large areas of shallow oceanic platform sequences in several Ontario greenstone belts. These ancient quartzite-bearing sequences — about three billion years old — are important for providing information about the geologic and tectonic development of that part of the Canadian Shield known as the Superior Province and the mineralization environments associated with these sequences in Ontario.

Detailed mapping in several greenstone belts led to better recognition of several gold-bearing deformation zones. One ogs field crew, headed by M. G. Morrice and G. A. MacMaster, discovered two new gold occurrences in the Monument Bay area of Lake of the Woods. One sample yielded 1.5 oz gold per ton.
