HudBay Minerals (HBM-T, HBMFF-O) has announced it is donating $200,000 and about half an acre of land to the Northern Manitoba Mining Academy (NMMA) for training purposes.
“The new mining academy will implement strategic training initiatives and skills enhancement, which is important for developing the skills of new entrants to the labour force as well as allowing current workers to upgrade their abilities,” said HudBay’s president and CEO David Garofalo in a press release.
The academy will operate as part of University College of the North, in Flin Flon, Man.
HudBay is part of a consortium funding the project including the federal and provincial governments.
The facility’s mandate is to give northern Manitobans access to mining-related training to strengthen the work force needed to sustain operations in the region. “It will provide much needed training for the next generation of mining professionals, who will support increased activity in mining districts such as Flin Flon, Snow Lake and Sherridon within the Flin Flon greenstone belt,” the company stated.
Manitoba’s entrepreneurship, training, and trade minister Peter Bjornson told the Winnipeg Free Press: “It is a fascinating and a very exciting opportunity for northern Manitoba.” He said NMMA provides “the assurances that the industry needs that the labour supply will be met.”
