Holmes elected chairman of OMA

The Ontario Mining Association (OMA) recently elected Warren Holmes to serve for a 2-year term as its new chairman. Holmes is vice-president and general manager of Falconbridge Ltd.’s Kidd Creek base metal mining division. He succeeds former OMA chairman Andy Rickaby, who is vice-president of mining for Toronto-based Denison Mines.

Holmes noted that the OMA has become more focused in recent years, and begun to work on a strategic long-term plan to make the mineral industry more competitive. “This is particularly important at this time when mining companies, like many other enterprises and individuals, are struggling to cope with the current harsh economic realities.”

He said the only way the industry can continue to provide social and economic benefits to the people of Ontario is to remain internationally competitive. Environmental and safety concerns are also taking on a higher profile. Holmes emphasized that the mineral sector is “strongly dedicated” to environmental protection and safe production. Despite several mine closures during the past year in northern Ontario, “the mining industry continues to make a proud contribution to this province and this country,” said Holmes.

“It is an industry which creates wealth, provides jobs, pays taxes and produces products on which our modern lifestyles are dependent.”

A native of Timmins, Ont., Holmes was previously vice-president and general manager of Falconbridge’s Sudbury operations. He also worked as an area mines manager for Pamour Porcupine Mines during the early 1980s. He is a graduate of Queen’s University and the University of Western Ontario.

The OMA carries out a broad range of activities including government relations and education on behalf of its 40-member companies.
