Your story on Great Basin Gold’s Ivanhoe area play in the Investment Commentary of Aug. 30 overlooked two interesting historical points about the Hollinger mine.
The operators put sulphide ore on the leach pad and created a bit of an environmental mess. Newmont didn’t know about this when it bought the deposit but was obligated to clean it up anyway, and somehow ruined the deposit for further development.
Also, there is an archeological site on which arrowheads were found in the immediate area and which prevented Newmont from drilling for more mineralization in the most prospective area.
