One of the best holes ever drilled on the Lamaque mine property near Val d’Or, Que, has been completed by Teck Exploration and partner Tundra Gold Mines. Hole T-13833 cut a 62.9-ft section in the No. 5 dioritic intrusive which assayed 0.293 oz gold per ton. True width is estimated at 52 ft, the partners say. Another hole above the first, intersected 15 ft grading 0.478 oz gold.
The holes are deemed significant in that they come from an untested section of the No 5 plug. According to Teck, which is the project operator, the holes appear to be “outlining an exceptionally broad and high grade zone within the No 5 plug.”
The drilling was completed from a station on the 1,800-ft level extended from the original Lamaque mine workings. To date, four intersections have cut ore grade within the plug, Teck reports. This plug is lithologically similar to the main plug from which the Lamaque mine produced most of the 4.5 million oz of gold mined during its 50-year operating life.
Both partners feel the operation will be reopened sometime late next year. This will require a threshold reserve of one million tons which would justify reopening one 600-ton-per-day module of the Lamaque mill (N.M., Aug.24/87).
Tundra can earn a 50% interest in the land surrounding the No 5 plug by spending $9 million on exploration.
