Hemlo to re-open Golden Giant

Production at the Golden Giant mine near Marathon, Ont., will resume by mid-December, says owner Hemlo Gold Mines (TSE).

Production at the mine was halted in late October after monitoring systems indicated localized fracturing of the surface of the wallrock within the production shaft at a depth of 700 metres.

Hemlo and its consultants have since completed an extensive inspection and analysis of the shaft. They concluded that the fracturing is confined to a thin skin of wall rock within the affected area and that the shaft itself is structurally sound.

It was determined that conventional rockbolting, screening and timbering techniques would be appropriate for repair of the affected area, and a contractor began the task in early November.
