Hecla purchasing Apex mine in Utah

Hecla will exercise an option with mine operator St. George Corp., which filed for bankruptcy last year. The mine was closed at the first of September, 1988. St. George is a subsidiary of Musto Explorations (TSE). Germanium and gallium have application in high-tech industries. The publication Metals Week reports Hecla will try a new solvent extraction technology being used by Cominco to recover germanium. The Cominco method is reportedly more efficient than the sulphide precipitation method employed by St. George.
