Hecla losses continue

The loss for the 9-month period ended Sept 30 stands at $9.2 million on revenues of $76.4 million. During the same period in 1988, Hecla reported a profit of $11.3 million on revenue of $78.8 million.

Also of importance is the company’s cash flow for the third quarter. President Arthur Brown noted that it was sufficient to pay for capital improvements under way at the Apex and Yellow Pine operations.

The company continues to be profitable in its industrial minerals division as well as at its flagship mine, the Republic, in Washington State.

Boding well for 1990 earnings is the start-up of two operations. The Yellow Pine mine, a seasonal heap leach operation in central Idaho, is expected to be producing gold in the spring of 1990. Also expected to begin production in early 1990 is the Apex germanium-gallium mine in Utah.
