Heap-leach project planned for Iduapriem

Ghanaian-Australian Goldfields, a subsidiary of Golden Shamrock Mines (TSE), will proceed with heap-leach gold production at the Iduapriem gold mine in Ghana.

The mine is already being expanded to 2.8 million from 2 million tonnes per year; the heap-leach project will be ancillary to current operations.

Once heap leaching gets under way, in late 1996, annual production will rise to 40,000 oz. gold, which will be extracted from 2.4 million tonnes of ore. Low-grade, stockpiled material will be heap-leached until 1998, at which time it will be replaced by run-of-mill ore.

The project carries an estimated capital cost of US$9.7 million, and operating costs are forecast at US$150 per oz.
