Yves Harvey, former president of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM), received a distinguished service award at the recent CIM MineSpace conference in Quebec City.

In addition to his lengthy service with CIM, Harvey was chief executive officer of Soquem, a Crown corporation of the Quebec government.

Also honoured was Franco-Nevada Mining President Pierre Lassonde, who was given the Inco Medal in recognition of his practical contribution to the industry. In 1996, Lassonde donated $5 million to the University of Toronto to establish a program in geological and mining engineering.

Numerous other awards were presented at the MineSpace conference, so-named because it focused on the relationship between the minerals and space industries.

Among the other winners was Kenneth Thomas, who captured the Selwyn G. Blaylock Medal in recognition of his distinguished service to the industry. Thomas spent the past 20 years in gold mining and recently joined Mississauga, Ont.-based consulting firm Hatch as managing director of mining and mineral processing. He is best known for his contributions to autoclaving in gold mining, oxygenated roasting, and thiosulphate leaching of gold as an alternative to cyanide.

Toronto’s Roland Ridler, won the A.O. Dufresne Award for his contributions to mineral exploration. Ridler helped develop the exhalative model, which is used in the search for base and precious metals deposits. For the past 14 years, he has headed the consulting firm Roland H. Ridler & Associates.

Boyd Davis of Kingston, Ont., won the Past Presidents Memorial Medal for being an outstanding example to youth looking to pursue a career in mining. He has worked as a consultant since 1998 in computational thermochemistry and runs two laboratories. He is an adjunct professor at Queens University’s Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Department, as well as the Mining Engineering Department, and was formerly chair of student activities for the Metallurgical Society of the CIM.
