Henry Halls, a University of Toronto professor and authority on the Lake Superior Basin, will address the Toronto Geological Discussion Group on April 16.
Halls will examine paleomagnetism, dyke swarms and Proterozoic deformation of the Superior Province. His talk will focus on the Matachewan and the Biscotasing dyke swarms, both of which are more than 2,000 million years old.
He will demonstrate that a previously unsuspected region of block faulting extends the uplift a further 50 km to the southwest. In addition, he will examine broad-scale tilting of the Superior Province and a relative rotation of 10-20 between the two halves of the province that may provide an explanation for the embayment in the craton that underlies Hudson Bay.
A later meeting of the discussion group, slated for May 7, will feature a talk by Frank Balint, vice-president of corporate development with Toronto-based Inmet Mining.
Balint will talk about the Cayeli volcanogenic deposit in Turkey, of which Inmet owns 55%.
Cayeli represents 25 million tonnes at 4% copper and 6% zinc, including reserves and resources plus material already mined, Recent drilling has intersected significant grades and depths.
Balint supervises Inmet’s base metal and gold exploration efforts in Lima, Peru, and Rouyn-Noranda, Que.
Both meetings will take place at 4 p.m. at the Ontario Club in downtown Toronto.
